Emergency Tidal Escape Platform (ETEP), Phase 1

The primary elements of this piece are 1. a base made of the body of a mountain ash tree blown over by Hurricane Irene in 2011, and 2. a top made from a small section of a sign that was torn off its moorings by the same storm.

The uncomfortable juxtaposition of these otherwise-unrelated parts opens the door for a number of experiments. Here we're using sign mounts - at 90 degrees to their standard orientation - as adjustable-then-lockable levelers for the table top.

Next up is using the mounts to mock up a very mini pulley system, and trying out some German railway figures as workers for the pulleys.
